If accurate, it would see the Fold line of phones adopt the Z branding first seen used for the Galaxy Z Flip. The Z Fold 2 is expected to take a similar form factor to the original Fold, with a vertical folding screen that opens up to tablet size but has an external phone-sized display on the outside. The Z Flip series will presumably continue to focus on flip phone designs. The original Galaxy Fold is still on sale, and tellingly has been sitting in the ‘Galaxy Z’ section of Samsung’s official website alongside the Z Flip, showing that Samsung is going to use the Z branding for all its foldables. The company told Bloomberg back in February that this was the plan, so the news of the new name should come as no surprise. Still, there’s no doubt that Galaxy Z Fold 2 is far less elegant a name for a product than the Galaxy Fold. Despite the clunky name, Samsung will be hoping for a less bumpy launch than it got with the first Fold. That phone broke in the hands of early American reviewers and it had to be redesigned, postponing the retail launch by months. We reviewed it at a patchy 5/10. The Z Fold 2 is set to be announced at Samsung’s next Unpacked event in August where the company will also unveil the Note 20 series.
