Some will consider it a Christmas miracle that Activision and Vicarious Visions have released the PS One classics on PS4 (not Xbox One) giving players a suitable hit of retro gaming joy – and potentially even inspiring a Spyro the Dragon remaster too.

When will I be able to play Crash Bandicoot on PC, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch?

Although the game has been out on PS4 for quite some time, it’s not actually a PS4 exclusive. It had an exclusivity period that is due to end soon, and Activision has since confirmed that the Crash Bandicoot Remaster is set to be released on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PC on June 29 2018, almost two weeks before the original 10 July 2018 release date announced earlier this year.

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane trilogy games

The remastered collection includes the following Crash Bandicoot games: •    Crash Bandicoot •    Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back •    Crash Bandicoot: Warped

Is it a remaster?

Developer Vicarious Visions says it’s hard to answer whether Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy is a ‘remaster’ or a remake’. It said: “It’s practically impossible to make a traditional remaster of the original Naughty Dog games. They’re roughly 20 years old, and technology has advanced significantly in that time. The original code and assets are nearly unusable. Nearly.” “But we don’t consider this a remake. We know how much you all love the original games, so we didn’t want to fully remake them. The N. Sane Trilogy is a remaster plus.”

Gameplay and new features

Vicarious Visions has quite a task taking these classic games from Naughty Dog and rebuilding them, saying it started by simply playing them to understand fully what was needed. The firm has used the original level geometry as a guide but completely rebuilt the Crash Bandicoot gameplay adding its own ‘lush and zany art, animation, and audio’. Levels aside, it confirmed that characters will be rebuilt following original designs and there will also be rebuilt cinematics inspired by the originals, while the music has been re-recorded too.

That said, Crash Bandicoot PS4 isn’t simply identical but with modern graphics. Vicarious Visions has detailed new features which will be added to the game with consideration for the team’s ideas, fan requests and the evolution of the franchise. “The first new features we’ve worked on take the best of each of the games and apply them to all three,” said the developer and include the following. •    A unified checkpoint & save game system – includes manual and auto-saving •    Unified menu system •    Time Trials in all three games Sony released a gameplay trailer for the upcoming game during its E3 2017 media showcase, highlighting some of the improvements compared to the original series.
